How to Bounce Back after Holiday Indulging

Does this sound familiar? You made it through a day of holiday indulging and wake up feeling bloated, puffy, fatigued. You just want to sit on your coach and watch movies all day. Not on my watch! Brush yourself off, stop feeling guilty, and follow these simple steps to get back to your productive, healthy, and happy self.

Here’s what you are going to do:

  1. Pour yourself a giant glass of filtered water, and squeeze half a fresh lemon into it. Finish the water completely. This will help kick start your metabolism and encourage detoxification. Plus, the natural diuretic properties from the lemon will help relieve bloating, puffiness, and water retention from the abundance of sugar and salt you consumed last night.
  2. Plan your menu for the day. Today your diet will consist of 3 food types: protein (such as whey protein isolate, eggs, chicken, turkey, grass-fed beef, tempeh), fresh vegetables (go nuts with dark leafy greens), and fresh fruit (especially berries, pomegranate, orange, and grapefruit). Oh, and MORE WATER and coffee or tea as you like. Too run down to prepare these meals? Head to Our Daily Brett and order a giant salad from the small batch salad bar. Wash down with a mint tea.
  3. Try one of my Detox Water Recipes below - they will get you excited to hydrate, help your body get rid of harmful toxins and burn fat, and provide a dose of much needed vitamins and minerals.

It’s important to use organic produce for detox water. The fruit will be sitting in the water for at least a few hours and it’s important to prevent contamination from pesticides, herbicides and other harmful chemicals.

THE FAT BURNER

You will need:

2 litres filtered water

1/2 lemon, sliced

1/2 lime, sliced

1/4-1/2 grapefruit, sliced

1 small cucumber, sliced

5-10 mint leaves

How to:

Wash your fruit well, slice, and add to the filtered water in a large pitcher. Let the ingredients sit for 1-2 hours, to allow the fruit to infuse the water.

Why I love this detox water:

The grapefruit juice encourages your liver to burn excess fat instead of store it. The cucumber, lemon, and lime are natural diuretics that will help flush toxins and excess water, while helping to heal your digestive tract. The mint leaves will help ease any indigestion and bloating you may be experiencing.

DECK THE HALLS

You will need:

2 litres filtered water

1/4 watermelon, cubed

4 sprigs of fresh rosemary

5-6 strawberries, sliced

How to:

Wash your fruit well, slice, and add to the filtered water in a large pitcher. Let the ingredients sit for 1-2 hours, to allow the fruit to infuse the water.

Why I love this detox water:

This water combines watermelon, strawberry, and rosemary. It tastes delicious and is festive to look at with its red and green colour profile. Watermelon is made of approximately 92% water, and provides a boost of vitamins C and B and antioxidants. The strawberries are antioxidant rich with tons of vitamin C and will help strengthen your immune system to fight colds and flus. Finally, the rosemary will help relieve any pain and inflammation that you may be experiencing, stimulate circulation, and sooth your stomach.

APPLE SPICE

You will need:

24 oz filtered water

2 tbsp apple cider vinegar

1/2 fresh lemon, juiced

1 tsp true cinnamon

1/2 apple, thinly sliced

How to:

Blend all ingredients except the apples. Wash apples well, slice and add to the water. Shake well before drinking. Let the ingredients sit for 1-2 hours, to allow the fruit to infuse the water.

Why I love this detox water:

This detox water is one for the keeners. The apple cider vinegar helps stabilize blood sugar, fight bad bacteria, and provides probiotics to promote a healthy gastrointestinal tract. The cinnamon helps balance blood sugar and curb your sugar cravings.

STORING YOUR DETOX WATER

If you plan to drink the detox water later in the day (5+ hours later), remove the fruit and store the infused water in the fridge. You run the risk of the fruit decomposing in the water if you leave it for too long! Consume the detox water within two days for optimal results.
